Planning enquiries

Please direct general planning enquiries to the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) by calling 136 186.

You can submit a planning enquiry online for: 

  • A planning permit application, where the Minister for Planning is the responsible authority
  • A planning scheme amendment where the Metropolitan Planning Services (MPS) is responsible

Planning permit applications

The DTP is only responsible for approving planning permit applications where the Minister for Planning is the responsible authority.

Get in touch with your local council for other permit applications where the Minister for Planning is not the responsible authority.

More information about Renewable energy facilities

Renewables are responsible for new planning permit applications for energy generation facilities that are one megawatt or greater.

This includes renewable energy and non-renewable energy facilities such as:

  • wind
  • solar
  • pumped hydro
  • gas
  • waste-to-energy.

Also the responsible authority for new planning permit applications for utility installations, including:

  • batteries with capacity of 1 megawatt or greater
  • power lines and substations that connect energy generation facilities to the electricity network
  • power lines with a capacity exceeding 220,000 volts
  • substations exceeding 66,000 volts.

The Regional Planning Partnerships team is responsible for delivering the Regional Planning Hub program, which provides statutory and strategic planning support and resources for the 48 rural and regional councils that can:

  • assist councils with peak workloads and priority developments
  • build land use planning capacity and capability within councils
  • improve planning schemes to simplify processes and approvals
  • help with significant regional planning projects.

The Regional Planning Hub program offers assistance for:

  • statutory planning
  • strategic planning
  • professional development.
