Enhanced advertising planning applications website

Bass Coast Shire Council

Snapshot

  • Timeline: July 2023 – October 2023
  • Funding amount: $19,800

Improving the online planning experience for applicants and community members

Problem

Community members from Bass Coast Shire found the process of submitting objections to proposed developments confusing, outdated and time consuming.

This meant more enquiries were being sent to council and more council resources spent addressing questions.

Solution

With the funding from the Digital Planning Grants program and in collaboration with the local community, Bass Coast Shire Council delivered a new user-friendly website.

Key features of the new websites include updated online guidance, improved access to information about proposed developments and a new function for community members to lodge objections easily online.

Benefits

Clearer online information has reduced simple enquiries and streamlined the objections process, delivering efficiencies for council planning staff.

Community are now better informed of how proposed developments may affect them and able to easily lodge feedback and objections online. This has led to increased community participation in the local planning process.

Learnings

Collaboration with local community started at the design stage and continued through to implementation. This ensured the final solution met the needs of the end users as well as grant funding and organisational requirements.

Very easy to follow
Quote from Bass Coast website user:
I must admit I like this part of the new website – we were never able to provide detail after advertising was complete. I like that we can put an alert up – and I like how the page shows the steps and what stage it’s up to. Simple and effective.
