Interim design guidelines were released in 2007, and provide advice to developers, designers and planners on what constitutes best-practice when developing vibrant and high quality large format retail centres.
The guidelines have been prepared to assist councils, designers and developers to achieve well located and designed outcomes when:
- developing new large format retail premises in or on the edge of activity centres.
- creating new activity centres with a large format retail component.
- developing any new trade supplies premises.
In the case of development in activity centres, the Activity Centre Design Guidelines should also be referred to.
The guidelines are structured under four elements of design consideration:
- urban context.
- equitable access.
- public amenity.
- environmental sustainability.
Each element has a series of objectives with a set of related design suggestions to achieve a good design response.
The guidelines are interim only, and are not referred to in planning schemes.
