The Minister for Planning is the responsible authority for new planning permit applications of all energy generation facilities, and battery storage with a capacity of 1 megawatt or greater.

This includes both renewable energy facilities and non-renewable energy facilities, such as

  • wind
  • solar
  • waste-to-energy
  • pumped hydro
  • gas.

Utility installations including:

  • batteries with capacity of 1 megawatt or greater
  • power lines and substations that connect energy generation facilities to the electricity network
  • power lines with a capacity exceeding 220,000 volts
  • substations exceeding 66,000 volts.

Permit applications should be lodged through the Permits Online Applicant Portal.

Pre-application service

DTP provides a pre-application service to applicants. To arrange a meeting, please submit a request via the Permits Online Applicant Portal and upload a copy of the renewable energy pre application meeting request form and any other supporting plans or documentation.
