The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning has released new guidance about using and applying Victoria's suite of residential zones.
The new planning practice notes provide advice to planners about how to prepare, use and apply Victoria's planning provisions for residential development.
Planning practice notes PPN90 (PDF, 4.5 MB) and PPN91 (PDF, 3.2 MB) cover important topics including how to plan for housing and how to make best use of the planning tools to balance housing growth with the protection of neighbourhood character.
The new planning practice notes were released on Thursday, and are the result of a comprehensive series of workshops about residential development, which included extensive consultation with councils, industry partners and other stakeholders.
The residential zones cover around 90% of urban land in metropolitan Melbourne, and also apply in regional cities and rural settlements.
